An American couple living in Kochi recently rescued two stray kittens:

We live in Edappally, Kochi. My husband and I rescued 2 small kittens off of the streets. We brought them into our home and love them very much. However, we have to go back to the U.S. in August and need to find a good home for them here. Money is no object, we could sponser them until they get adopted out. They are potty trained to go in shredded newspaper as we cannot find kitty litter here in Kochi. They have seen a Vet and go back to get their rabbi shots at the end of this month.

We have to go to Bangalore in August and could take them with us and bring them to you if you could take them and find them a good home.

It isn't hard to take cats to the US, but they will probably be shifting from the US to another country once again pretty soon, which means they can't be sure of giving these two kitties a permanent home. If you know anyone in Kochi who will adopt them, please contact us. If you live in Bangalore and would like to adopt them, do the same. Angela and her husband are visiting Bangalore in August and have agreed to drop Poocha and Billi off at our home for fostering if no one in Kochi has taken them in by then.

People.

We help kittens find loving homes. That's how it works. We're not a kitten supermarket, we don't supply kittens on the basis of colour, weight or size. If you really want a feline friend to care for, the colour isn't that important. I've seen people turn their noses up at grey tabbies or tortoisehells, and yet two of the most loving cats we have are a grey tom and a tortie girl.

We have to draw the line somewhere - actually we draw a lot of lines when it comes to adopting out kittens - and I'm afraid we can't really entertain requests that state a strong colour preference. I've always had cats who either moved in on their own or had to be taken in because no one else would have them, and I have never found that colour makes a difference to how awesome a cat is going to be.

Our little siamese boy, Tama Chan is doing great in his new home! Our friends Rajeev and Smita adopted them for Rajeev's parents. They seem to have really taken to him - they keep his food bowl on the dining table through the day, he's taken over the dog's chair and his nocturnal antics have ensured that they have a happening night life too!

Abandoned Pomeranian looking for a loving home

We found a cute white Pomeranian /Samoyed (not sure about the breed) on the roads of JP Nagar last night. Looks like he has either got lost or has been abandoned by the owners. The nearby shopkeeper reported that he had not eaten anything for the whole day. We had called CUPA for rescueing this little one, but it was about 10 pm then and they mentioned that it would not be possible to make it before Monday morning or tuesday (Monday being Bharat bandh).

I have got him home with me and he is happy now. However unfortunately, my landlord does not allow pets here and furthermore I donot stay home mostly as my job demands travelling very frequently. I am looking for a home for Sunny (as we have started calling him) as soon as possible.

Sunny has been very friendly and fun dog to be with. It just took him few minutes to win our hearts with his cute , naughty and very well behaved nature. Relevantly, Sunny is a very well trained dog. I am amazed at how he listens to what we say just like a human would.

Please help Sunny get to a loving home where he can share the immense love that he has filled in his little heart.

In the last two months, we've found new homes for 9 kittens and one adult cat. Most of the adoptions happened because someone saw this blog and mailed us, so keep those mails coming!

Not for the people who came over last night wanting to adopt kittens.

So much so that, even though we'd ask them to come on the weekend, they barged into our home on a work night. A mother and her 20-something daughter, who'd been telling us how much her mother loved cats and used to bring kittens home in her schoolbag as a schoolgirl. The first thing I noticed is that the older woman doesn't seem to like cats very much. She shrinks away from them with abrupt, jerky motions. When one of our cats approaches her curiously, she instinctively begins to aim a kick at it before stopping herself.

Anyway, we bring them two of the little grey kittens we have at home. The mother's face falls. The daughter plays with them, holds one out to her mother who shrinks away from it. 'Oh, these are ordinary grey kittens...we want a brown and white, or a black or white or a white one...' the woman says. We go to put the kittens back and we hear her going on about the 'colour' of the kittens and how unappealing it is. She calls up someone on her cellphone and loudly declaims in Malyalam how unappealing these 'ash colour' kittens are. You're no beauty yourself, I think to myself.

These people go on and on about how they want kittens of some other colour, as if our shop is a feline department store. I retreat to the computer room to simmer gently while Yasmine politely sends them away with false assurances that we'll call them if we get other kittens. We'll never call them.

I have been feeding a feral regularly and she has recently given birth to 4 kittens. She has chosen a neighbour's terrace for raising her litter. I live in an apartment and can see them from my window. Till now the owners of that house have been kind enough not to trouble them...i am keeping my fingers crossed that they don't harm the poor babies.

The kittens seem to be around a month old and thriving on their mom's milk till now. They are very adorable. I don't know their gender. Two are orange coloured with stripes (like their mum :) ), one is a tri coloured cutie (a mix of black, white and golden) and the other one is a golden and white sweetheart.

They are all very adorable and playful. I was hoping if we could find some good homes for them before we lose them to the cruel world outside :( If you could post this up on your blog, it would be great. If anyone's interested to adopt them, I would be glad to help.

First the good news: The shelter has moved to a place near off Sarjapur Road and slowly the furry friends of ours (slightly shy of 200 and all Indian dogs) are being fed twice and have proper shelter over their heads and have been vaccinated this year. The bad news: the fight for survival continues.
Another moajor need, a vet and dispensary in the shelter premise is the next big thing we would like to achieve. This is where I request you all to pitch in.

To start with besides an ongoing medicines and grooming products (combs, brushes, soaps, shampoos, anti flea, anti tick powder, etc.) , the below list is what we need to setup the clinic:

A stray Palmenroller attacking cats in my neighbourhood

A huge palmenroller(common palm civet/Paradoxurus hermaphroditis) has recently been spotted in the neighbourhood of my Calcutta home. This is a photo i have found on the net similar to the one in our locality.

I have 6 cats here, of which 2 are just 2 months old another is 4.5 months, the rest are adults but of particularly kiddish (that they are for us) and non-violent disposition. About 45 mins back the civet has attacked my 2 months old kittens and last night it has attacked one of our adult cats. We are greatly worried due to this.

I am very compassionate towards the civet and donot want to adopt any kind of cruel measures but this is a big threat for my cat family.

I have tried calling Compasssionate Crusaders but could not reach them. Could you please help me with some contacts of NGOs to get the civet back to its natural habitat. I would be leaving calcutta for Bangalore in a couple of days and would love to have this issue resolved before i have to leave. Your help would be very much appreciated.

Radio Indigo apologized twice on air following the protests and replied to each email that was sent against the program and RJ Meghna.

I have heard from other people who called the station that they are considering running programs to sensitize people towards animal related issues. I am glad that they are taking this stand.

I hope though that the person who committed this crime is traced and arrested, but I think that chances of that happening are slim.

JP's friend called me from Mumbai to ask for help with another cruelty case. Someone had thrown his girlfriend's pet cat against the wall, breaking the cats leg. She wanted to know what could be done. I thought it is useful to post information about what can be done in such cases.

Firstly, BE BRAVE. Go ahead and file an FIR. Or ask an animal welfare NGO to do it for you. Sadly the police are not always aware of the laws that protect animals. It is useful if you take with you a print out or better still if you have a copy of the Indian Constitution with you.

Based on the FIR a police constable goes to the house and arrests the person and confiscates the animal. We accompany because we take the animal away. However, if an NGO is helping you, they will. The confiscation may not be immediate because the family might fight it. However, in most cases the animal is taken away.

IPC(Indian Penal Code)Section 428.

Mischief by killing or maiming animal of the value of ten rupees
Whoever commits mischief by killing, poisoning, maiming or rendering useless any animal or animals of the value of ten rupees or upwards, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to two years, or with fine, or with both.

Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, section 11, (1), (a)

11. (1) if any person
(a) beats, kicks, over-rides, over-drives, over-loads, tortures or otherwise treats any animal so as to subject it to unnecessary pain or suffering or causes, or being the owner permits, any animal to be so treated or

(b) *(employs in any work or labour or for any purpose any animal which, by reason of its age or any disease) infirmity, wound, sore or other cause, is unfit to be so employed or, being the owner, permits any such unfit animal to be employed; or

(c) willfully and unreasonably administers any injurious drug or injurious substance to **(any animal) or willfully and unreasonably causes or attempts to cause any such drug or substance to be taken by ***(any animal;) or

He shall be punishable **** (in the case of a first offence, with fine which shall not be less than ten rupees but which may extend to fifty rupees and in the case of a second or subsequent offence committed within three years of the previous offence, with fine which shall not be less than twenty five rupees but which may extend, to one hundred rupees or with imprisonment for a term which may extend, to three months, or with both.)

On Friday, April 17th 2009, Radio Indigo had a contest. ‘Worst Dashboard Disaster Contest’. The prize was given to a man who killed his sisters cat by leaving it in an overheated car for a long time. The Radio Jockey Meghna and the man laughed over the incident.

I think this deserves the severest condemnation and stern action. Apparently the channel has apologised because of the uproar this incident has caused but this is not good enough. When I called the administrative officer of the channel, he turned out to be a very nervous man who had nothing to say and promised me that he would give me the number of the RJ. He never did. I expected nothing less. Then I was given the number of the program-in-charge- Mr.Santosh.He initially did not take my call but called me back and pretended he could not hear me, so that ended the conversation.

Radio Indigo has aided and abetted a culpable offence. A PIL has to be filed and a legal notice has to be sent to both parties. Meanwhile I want this radio channel to be condemned for what it has done and RJ Meghna taken to task.

Prepare for war...again!

Hi all,
I am back, and not with good news. You must have all read about the recent attack, today I caught this sick show on the new local channel 9 TV or something. It was so biased! From the imagery of a snarling dog, to the captions aimed at scaring people, this item was so one-sided, that it my blood boil....
There was some lady called Diana who represented some group called "Stray Dog Free Bangalore" or soemthing, who was so weird. Apparently, 6 people in her lane have been bitten (what are the chances?), and she was talking of stuff like laws for strays. Think of that. Not for pet-owners. But a law that the stray dog needs to follow. If the underlying message was not rabble-rousing for another cull, it would have been funny.
Tried desperately to call in, couldn't get through.
The take-away : frenzied calls, venom aimed at strays calling for extermination, and the unfortunate BBMP man Parviz Ahmed Piran, who, strangely, made sense was cornered with sarcasm and fury.
Overall, a sinking feeling. I fear dark clouds on the horizon again....

I returned to Bangalore two and a half weeks ago to some good news and some bad news. My first day back in India I went looking for my feline and canine buddies to do some catching up. In the case of the ginger tom Templeton, he came looking for me as usual. I found the dog who I meet at my bus stop, the dog who is near the auto stand by my house and I found Ram at the construction site down the road. But no Leo. He had disappeared and no one seems to know what has become of him. As he was nearly grown I am hopeful that he just moved on but it is hard to say. Though Leo was no longer at the construction site I was greeted by 2 newcomers, two sweet and adorable motherless little puppies, one girl and one boy. For the past 2 weeks I have been feeding them and playing with them until a few days ago I was greeted with the sad news that the little girl had been hit and killed by a vehicle. I was of course devastated and now I am very concerned for the safety of the little boy. He is a very sweet and friendly puppy and has the most adorable reflex to roll on his back in order to get his belly scratched as soon as you get near him. He is maybe a month old and is white with black spots. I am not able to keep him as I won't be able to bring him back to the US with us when we return but I would love to find this very special fellow a home. I would be willing to pay for his vaccinations and sterilization if someone would be his and my hero and step up and open their home to this loving guy. I have met plenty of street puppies, all of whom I loved and adored but this one is even more special. I can promise you it will be one of the best decisions you have ever made. If anyone is interested please just leave a comment and I will work out a way to get in touch. Thanks.

even though this piece is only attributed to rossini and we dont know the circumstances which inspired it, it is often thought of as what a composer came up with for two rival sopranos who hated each other..catfight! by any other name..etc.

Meet Chicky Little!

Last week, while Yasmine was in Singapore, several tragedies occured.

Three little orphaned kittens who'd been left with us died, one in my arms, one while I was out meeting friends and one strangled himself in a ghastly accident with bedsheet tassles.

The fourth lived.

Frantic after the last three deaths, I did everything I could for her. Soaked my stubble with Lactol so that she would suckle (this is why men make better surrogate cat mamas), stuffed food supplement paste and diarrhea medicine down her throat and generally let her treat me as a combined mattress and toilet.

Then Yasmine returned, and helped me clean the little kitten and continue administering doses of medicine. She also shared mattess and toilet duties with me, so I now had to change t-shirts only once a night.

Now we think she's going to live, and we'd like you to meet her.

Yet again, another common scene on the roads of Bangalore!

A cute little kitten smashed on JC Road. All that was left to see was a stretched skin with some fur that was just enough to indicate that it had once had a little heart inside it...

At about 9 in the morning, when I was rushing to office, my eyes caught a calico skin glued to the road. My heart aches to imagine the pain that this little kitten had gone through when it was hit by a monstrous vehicle. It might have been just injured and yet not dead when it was hit by another vehicle... and the sequence probably had continued until 9 in the morning till it only had its skin left on the road.

Only a very few eyes from the speeding vehicles noticed the silent heart breaking tale that JC Road had to say that morning!

A little jubilant soul that had waited all day to cross the road in the midnight only to be squashed by our business! Who knows there might be a poor pet guardian, still waiting each moment of the day hoping that the dear one will return home!

This is not the only instance! Off late the roads of Bangalore have witnessed numerous such cases
each day. Animals run over by vehicles and left to be squashed continuously until the last mark of their remains gets eroded with yet another speeding wheel!

Time is precious! No doubt.... but is it really more precious than saving ourselves the guilt of being a murderer the rest of our lives?

Accidents happen! It is human to make mistakes! But is it human to leave behind a dying/injured life and flee away?

Accidents happen "accidentally"! Running away from it does not!

In the unfortunate event that an animal is hit by our car, can't we simply spare 5 precious minutes of our time to ensure that the injured animal is at least moved to the side of the street where it can rest in peace, if not call for an emergency help!

Is there really much of a difference whether it is a human or an animal that is hit by the car? The pain of injury is of the same intensity in both cases. It is only that the helplessness is rather intense incase of animals!

Let us all be Man and human enough to shoulder the responsibility of the injured being.

Even a million Animal Care Organizations in the city would not be of help unless each one of us grows the same human values to foster kindness and care for each and every living being.

Be kind ! Make Bangalore a safer place to live for us and for our dear animals!

'When we started out as mere pet owners and animal lovers, rescuing the odd kitten and taking it off to one of the big shelters, it slowly dawned on us that shelter conditions are really not suitable for these sensitive creatures, despite the best efforts of the concerned groups, mainly due to over-crowded conditions.
Anguished at the situation, we started taking in kittens and when they didn’t find homes, we just kept them..until we realised we had reached full-house! It soon became evident that there is a crying need for homes, shelters, rescue facilities, a sterilisation programme….. '

A bit of a light diversion, although scathing in its own way:
Recently, an apartment complex in Whitefield was innundated by waters rising as a result of the freakish rains that have been lashing Bangalore. The residents were evacuated, with the exception of a friend of Yasimne's. This woman has pet animals at home - cats and a dog - and as they could not be evacuated as well, elected to stay in her flat (fortunately well above the flood waters) and make do with stored groceries until the waters receded and normal life could be resumed.

She spent a whole weekend alone, except for her pets, in her flat, with no electricity and dwindling supplies. A reporter from the Slimes of India (my personal nickname for the Times of India) spoke to her, but chose not to mention her predicament in the published coverage.

I can't help but wonder how different it would have been if she hadn't been a slightly dotty cat-and-dog-lady but someone whom the Slimes could embrace as one of their own, a happening citizen of the hip new India everyone loves and wants to a ticket to. What if it had been a dj?

Heroic dj wishes Bangalore could party longer
DJ NoVein, a resident of the XYZ Apartment Complex in Whitefield, is stranded in his flat, trapped by floods, with only his collection of rare house music CDs to keep him company. 'Some guys came to rescue me but they wouldn't take my CDs so I stayed here, man. This stuff is priceless!' NoVein earns an honest living playing tracks from these CDs to sweaty partylovers in the clubs and pubs of Bangalore. Leaving them at the mercy of looters would not be an option for this hardworking presser of the play button.

'I've got my stash with me so I'm okay,' he says, referring no doubt to a treasure trove of his favourite Saif-style Lays chips, 'but some JD would be nice,' he adds with a boyish grin. Always a paper with a will to support a deserving cause, the Slimes has set up a fund to help buy NoVein that bottle of Jack Daniels. A team of ardent socialites has been despatched by car to deliver this all-important life saving cargo and was last seen taking a detour towards Hoskate for herbal diversions. In the meantime, NoVein urges his fans to be calm, and says 'Man, I can't wait to get back to the party! Pity it has to end at 11.30.'

CUPA's Ambulance

CUPA is in the process of giving me a written explanation for not sending the ambulance when Madhubanthi requested it.Meanwhile I got a call from a CUPA trustee who was very upset to hear that no ambulance was sent that evening.

She also gave me very disturbing news. CUPA has more or less suspended its night emergency service due to a financial crisis. I am not sure of the details butit seems that CUPA can no longer afford to have a 24 hour ambulance service.This means that injured animals cannot be helped anymore, especially at night.

What she suggested is that if the ambulance service can be sponsored then it could be restored.The rough break up per month is as follows:

Our little baby Thora passed away on August 11th. She'd been ill for a while - first stomach problems, then pneumonia and finally just a gradual all-round weakening. We kept deciding to have her euthanised - and then she'd find a reserve of energy from somewhere and greet us with her sweet, friendly meow and our hearts would melt again.

On the 11th, she'd been fading very fast for a few days, and we'd decided the time had come. We called Dr Pawan and he agreed to come over at night to administer the injection.

At around 5 PM I was lying in bed with Thora near my feet. Over the last few days, all her friends had come to spend a little time with her. All the kittens she had looked after like a little mother hen - Kek, Kauket, Rukmini, Elli, Desmond, UFO, Clio. Her friends Sahara and Freddie. The little kitten who'd grown to be her best friend and co-conspirator in sitting around in extremely cute calendar poses, Calliope. Gubbi, the dog who came home a day before her and had watched over her as a weak, faltering kitten. Each of them had a little special time to cuddle with her. Thora was the most social and friendly cat I've ever known.

Earlier that evening, Elli thoroughly groomed Thora before leaving the room to eat. Calliope and I remained in the room. Now and then Thora would leave the bed to go find some dark corner to huddle in - cats tend to do this when they sense the end is near. Each time, I would pick her up and bring her back. Everytime I patted her, she found the energy for a weak little purr. In case she was thirsty, I wetted her mouth with some water. She was already too weak to eat anyhing.

Finally, she settled down for a while, and I lay down reading a book. After a few minutes I looked up. Thora had made to wander off again, and she lay there perfectly still, arrested in the middle of getting up. I went up to her. She wasn't breathing. No heartbeat. I waited for a while and watched. The few last fleas were leaving her body, sensing that their host was no more.

I know it could have made no difference to her at that point, but I closed her eyes and moved her into a more comfortable position. My little baby Thora was no more.

I had to wait until much later that evening before Yasmine was back and we could bury her. When I went to fetch her body, I found that Calliope had lain down next to Thora's body, hugging her and keeping a last vigil. The calendar calicos had manged one last pose, and it was a show-stopper.

We buried her up in our rooftop garden, the garden that she had climbed up to so slowly and painfully so many times as a frail kitten longing for warmth. We placed a flower pot over the spot. I think that's when it really hit me. She's gone now.

Goodbye, Thora.

Animal Helplines for Bangalore

As the rains bathed the streets of Bangalore today evening, we all were rushing back home after the long day. But for a cow on Kanakpura Road, who would never again return to the warmth of home.

As I was riding back home today, I found a cow lying and groaning in pain(wounded in the back an head) in the middle of Kanakpura Main road, just a few yards after World City Apartments. A relentless queue of vehicles only gushed past her turning a deaf ear to her agony. Me and my friend stopped our bike on the other side of the divider to see if we could be of some help. It was barely anything that was in our capacity to do !
Sadly enough only 2 other people came to tell me that it was a mad cow and that I should not be helping her. I didn't get any help from anyone other than in an attempt to dragg the Cow to the side of the road where probably the sound of the horns and vehicles would not interrupt the trans in which she would gradually travel closer to God.

I wonder what has made us Humans so selfish these days to be able to bear to see another life in pain. So efficiently do we un-hear the grief and agony of these animals, of others !!!

I tried calling Cupa for helping and rescuing the cow... I was asked to call Karuna . So did I ... but only to get no response. I returned home and looked up animal helplines ... but to my greatest dismay ... none of the numbers worked!!!

I know not where and how she is now. The rains have stopped ... and I hope her suffering too...

Do we have any numbers (emergency rescue) for bangalore that we can rely on for prompt action(atleast willingness to act) in such scenarios in future ? Some Numbers that we can keep handy since such situations are increasingly frequent scenes these days ?

Biff is a little grey tabby boy who came to stay with us about three months back. He was found hiding behind a water closet in the girl's restroom at the school where Yasmine teaches. He was small, sneezy, scared and, somehow, he'd singed his whiskers off.

Tiny as he was, his miaow was piercing. We were subjected to Biffiano Pavarotti's arias from 10 each night until about 6 in the morning, at which point he'd eat a little and retire to Yasmine's cupbaord to sleep. Certainly not what you'd call a command performance.

Around this time, Snowflake, a year-old white Persian tom who sometimes boards with us dropped in for a week's stay. Snowflake and Biff became inseperable. Biff finally settled in and gave up his nocturnal vocal exercises, instead playing with Snowflake all day long. The difference in sizes meant that their games mainly consisted of Snowflake massacring Biff until they were both tired out and fell asleep.

Eventually, Snowflake had to go back to his own family, but by then Biff had settled in. He found a new friend in Logi, our home-grown pirate kitten. Along with Logi's sister Elli, and our other junior cats, Rukmini, Calliope and Thora (who is quite grown up but mentally regresses to the age of the youngest cat around so as to join in the fun) Biff causes utter havoc in our living room and dining room, breaking eggs, dropping milk, ripping paper and stealing hearts.

And you can see his whiskers have grown back!

Kit Kit's company while I was away

So Yasmine and JP sweetly agreed to take in Kit Kit while I was away visiting folks at home. I was rather worried about Kit Kit, who doesn't take very well to other cats. Since she's pretty much grown up with me around, she doesn't seem to realise that there are other cats in the world besides here. Anyway, here are her furry and feline companions. Of course, she refused to socialise with them, including Popsicles, who tried so very hard to get her attention! Even his big melt-you-down eyes didn't have any effect on snooty Kit Kit!

This morning, our vet, Dr. Pawan informed Yasmine that one of his - um - patients' owners sounds about right, more or less - had found a kitten in his garden. The kitten was very small, and as the man's 6 year-old tom wasn't especially keen on sharing his kingdom with the interloper, a new home was needed for the little one.

We're glad to say that her story already has a happy ending- our friends Arathi and Roy, who already own a little ginger tom (we think he's a bonsai tiger) called Ulf adopted him within hours of our call. So now, this little tortie has a new home and a playmate as well! Here are a couple of picture of this lucky little girl:

Magic Names for Mystic Cats is a great site if you're looking for mythological names for your cats (and indeed, other pets/offspring). Yasmine and I found this one looking for Nordic names for Mini's kittens (we settled on Logi and Elli at last - look 'em up). It's got names from a variety of mythologies, ancient and classical, eastern and western, all chosen specially with various kinds of cats in mind and delightful stories about each name.

On a broader note, this site reminds me so much of the pre-Web 2.0 era, when the net was full of academic sites and delightful and eccentric little homepages put up by private individuals with a great deal of passion and knowledge around a chosen subject matter. Now it's just bad spellings, wingnut rants and lolzzz. Bah.

Cats may claw your furniture, ignore your calls and smudge your walls with paw prints, but researchers at the University of Minnesota have found they also might reduce your risk of dying from a heart attack.

Comparing 4,435 adults in the United States, researchers found that people who didn't own a cat had a 40 percent higher risk of dying from heart disease.

The study results were disclosed Thursday at the International Stroke Conference in New Orleans.

"Our best guess would be that having a pet provides some amelioration against stress and anxiety, and we're seeing a benefit related to that," said Dr. Adnan Qureshi, a U neurologist and executive director of the Minnesota Stroke Initiative.

Smoking, hypertension and high cholesterol are clearly the top risk factors, but this data suggests not owning a cat could be as risky as diabetes, sleep disorders and family histories of heart disease, Qureshi said.

The study did not find a protective relationship for dog owners, but Qureshi said that could be a limitation of the data rather than a conclusion.

The research used a federal database created more than 20 years ago to track dietary behaviors and cardiac risk factors among adults ages 30 to 75. About half of those people owned cats, so Qureshi and other researchers compared their health outcomes with those who didn't.

While 3.4 percent of the cat owners died of heart attacks, that figure jumped to 5.8 percent for those without cats. The research suggests a statistically significant relationship - even after adjusting the two groups for differing ages, races and health habits - but doesn't pinpoint the physical or social factors of cat ownership that could be at work.

"There may be an effect even on blood pressure," said Qureshi, who owns a cat, "but we haven't looked at that. It could clearly have a beneficial effect that we don't completely understand at this point."

There was no difference in stroke risk between the two groups.

Many hospitals and nursing homes already believe pets can be therapeutic and offer "animal-assisted therapy" programs that give patients time with trained dogs or other animals.

Members of the Saintly City Cat Club in St. Paul have taken cats to nursing homes. Club leader Linda Mae Baker said just petting a cat probably lowers anxiety and blood pressure.

"It's probably the touch, the fact that they start purring, usually, when you pet them," she said. "I think that's basically what it is. It's very unconditional love."

The findings were greeted with less enthusiasm by Cat Haters of the World, or CHOW, a satirical Web site. The site's Boston creator said cats are frustrating and have contempt for their owners.

"Medically speaking, I think it's more relaxing to have a dog as a pet," said Pam, who didn't give her full name because of hate mail she has received. "I just think that dogs provide more companionship. I know that cat lovers would disagree."

The answer is that yes, pets and kids are completely compatible and that with parental involvement and a bit of planning the experience can be positive for everyone involved. The first consideration is what pet is appropriate for you and your family. While all kinds of pets can bring children pleasure, it is important to choose a pet that is right for your family, your home, and your lifestyle; and one that your child can help care for. Most pets would be a wonderful match for children, but aggressive animals should be avoided. Non-aggressive dogs and cats make wonderful companions for your child, but one might want to avoid exotic and unusual pets that may require special care.

Taking care of a pet can help children develop social skills. However, a few simple and straightforward guidelines apply:

Since very young children (under the age of 3-4 years) do not have the maturity to control their aggressive and angry impulses, they should be monitored with pets.

Young children (under 10 years) are rarely able to care for a large animal, a cat or a dog, on their own.

Parents must oversee the pet's care even if they believe their child is old enough to care for a pet.

Having grown up on a farm I was raised with a number of different pets and I have such loving memories of each and every one. My niece and nephew now are also experiencing the joy of having pets as a part of their childhood. Hello everyone! I know that this is a Cats of Bangalore page, but a friend of mine in the Ukraine just sent me some pics of her feline companion and I thought that anyone who loves Banglore cats would also appreciate a Ukrainian addition. So, introducing Murchyk, the cutest cat in all of the Ukraine!

On a different note, I was encouraged to have a conversation with a colleague at work yesterday who had overheard one of my many stories of our Mira and Chaya some time ago just after we had adopted them. She was curious as to how it was going with them, did we enjoy them and vice versa, did they scratch, were they actually affectionate, etc. She then proceeded to confide in me that she and her husband were thinking of getting a pet and since she had heard that we had cats that maybe they should consider that as an option. I was thrilled, and I did everything in my power to encourage her that cats make wonderful companions and are the perfect pet for busy people that might not have the time to give a dog the attention that they need. Keep your fingers crossed, I have my toes crossed also, I know that there are so many sweet and adorable kittens (and puppies for that matter) in the shelters that desperately need a home. Here's hoping that a couple will be adopted soon!

Greetings! I hope that everyone had a wonderful New Year and that 2008 will bring with it good health and happiness for you, your family and all of your pets. My husband Eric and I spent the holiday season in the United States with our family and friends and had a wonderful time. We had the pleasure of sharing my parents’ home with their two big and beautiful cats Opie and Bubbles who are probably the sweetest most loving cats in the entire world. They were always looking for a hand to pet them or a lap to snuggle up on and Eric and I were more than happy to oblige. Both of the cats particularly like to snuggle on anyone that they can find napping and will happily hop up and share a catnap. We were sad to not only leave our family and friends on our return, but also the sweet animals that we shared our holiday with. We unfortunately also had a little sadness while we were visiting home, our parents’ thirteen year old Labrador Midnight who had developed a tumor began to deteriorate and my parents had to make the heartbreaking decision to have her put to sleep. This was very difficult as she was a very gentle and loyal dog, but also because her six-year-old son Clifford who had been by her side since his birth was deprived of his mother and closest friend. He was quite confused and cried for her company as he lay down to sleep at night which left my mother and I in tears. The difficulty of the situation was compounded by the cold and snow that typify our Mid-Western winters. As much as we tried to coax Clifford to come inside so that we could comfort him and warm him, he refused, as he is an outside farm dog. We did the best that we could to be with him, and by the time that we left for India he seemed to be recovering.

Yasmine and JP were kind enough to board our Mira and Chaya (the supposed well-behaved cats from JP’s post, why they behave for JP and Yasmine and not us is beyond my comprehension) while we were on holiday and we retrieved them on our return last Thursday. Happily I can report that they made it home with us safely (with of course Chaya’s endless moaning and groaning throughout the taxi ride) and were greeted by a houseful of new toys that we had brought for them. They have since been happily playing and causing trouble, but we are thrilled to have them back with us. We were able to bring back with us a bottle and many nipples designed for newborn kittens as well as formula for the kittens if they have been abandoned. We are happy to share these things if you find that you have a need. Additionally we will be returning to the US again in July for a holiday and if there are any pet needs that you have that can’t be met here in India, please inform us and we will do our best to bring those items back when we return.

I am also happy to report that as far as I can tell, Mira and Chaya are worm-free! Thank you all who responded to my questions about what to do, and a special thanks to Yasmine and JP who administered the second of the two Drontal treatments. They see to have worked!

A few updates from the House Of Many Cats:

Our missing cat, Popsicle surfaced in the company of a local stray that we feed and eventually found his way back home.

Two of the kittens we'd posted about earlier have already found good homes; a third will soon be taken home by his new slaves. We still have three little greys available for adoption, so pass the word on.

There's more: our white-with-black-patches girl, Mini, who frantically fought off all attempts to have her taken to the shelter for sterlisation, and went on to carouse (and possibly also gambol) with several likely stray lads became pregnant. She delivered on the night of the 30th. She had 3 black-and-white kittens. Sadly, one was very weak and died earlier today. There are flowers growing above his grave. The other two kittens seem fine, and will also need homes in due course.

Finally, all our various boarders over the holiday season are fine. Mira and Chhaya are two of the best-behaved, most affectionate cats we've boarded. Mira is the braver of the two, but Chhaya is an extrememly loving and gentle soul, once she lets her guard down. Gus, the bossy tuxedo cat, finally went home last week after one and a half months. Our house actually seems a bit empty without her. Snowflake, who is all grown up and is considering having his name changed to Snowdragon also spent a weekend with us, and is still great friends with Popsicle. Amore is beautiful, and a big bully, as are Maximus and Achilles.

We simply have to find other people to help out with this seasonal rush in future - we haven't taken a holiday outside Bangalore since June, and will probably have to cancel our Coorg plans for January (yes, this is a very palpable hint shamelessly directed at whoever is willing to help out).

Hi everyone, I need some help, but beware, this is a little gross. Every once in a while I will catch Mira or Chaya in the act of pooping (they are actually not bashful about it at all) and I take the opportunity to peek at their poo to check for worms before they bury in under a mound of litter, just to be on the safe side. I was horrified tonight to find disgusting little white worms wiggling in Mira's poo, I never actually imagined that they would get worms, I thought that I was just being paranoid and a little twisted to be checking in the first place. We have had the girls for around 5 and a half months and in that time have had them de-wormed three times, bringing them to the Veterinary Hospital in Hebbal whenever instructed. They have been administered .2 ml of Nemocid each time and their next scheduled de-worming isn't until the end of December. We actually were planning on buying the Nemocid from a pet pharmacy and administering it to the girls ourselves as we got pretty adept at giving them liquid oral medications while they were recovering from their spayings and we were giving them both 2 ml of antibiotics two times a day (which they absolutely dreaded). Additionally, the vets and vet trainees at the hospital don't actually do a very good job at administering the de-wormer, the last time they asked us to just do it since they couldn't get Chaya to hold still and open her mouth.

Has anyone out there ever administered a de-wormer to their own cats, and if so which one at what dosage? Is the dosage dependent on the weight of the cat? Or should we just go to some other vet or the clinic at CUPA? Additionally, I have no idea how she got the worms to begin with. We feed them Royal Canin kitten food which we keep in a sealed container and sometimes we give them snacks, but all are either pre-packaged treats or well-cooked meat like chicken, liver, and gizzards which we keep refrigerated. Any thoughts on where they might have come from? I have never noticed them until now so I doubt that they are a remnant of their lives in the Karuna shelter. Surely tap water wouldn't harbor worm embryos or worms, would it? If you have any information or suggestions, I would really appreciate it, we need to get them treatment soon as we are going out of town for 3 weeks after this weekend. Thanks in advance.

Two or three friends can join together and sponsor a day's meal. Maybe its your child's birthday or your parent's wedding aniv or a day when you are honouring your ancestors or simply a special day you are celebrating...give them the gift of knowing that animals in need are being helped.

New Bangalore Cat Lover

Hello everyone, I happened upon this site a few days ago and now am a member so I wanted to introduce the family. My husband Eric and I (Suzi) moved to Bangalore from Chicago in November 2006. After visiting home in June and staying with a friend who has two fluffy furballs we decided to try to get one of our own once we returned to Bangalore. Sure enough, we returned June 21 and picked up the new additions to our family on July 9. I believe very strongly in adopting pets from shelters so we found our girls at the Karuna shelter. I found the conditions at the shelter to be horrific, the cats and kittens were not fed properly and the pen reeked of urine. We had intended to take home just one kitten, but we saw our girls curled up together and they looked so sweet and innocent that we had to adopt both, two motherless sisters who we later named Mira and Chaya (sorry, I know it should be Chhaya but I can't quite get the hh thing). We have been enjoying their company ever since. Actually, scratch that, they have been tolerating our company ever since as our home stopped being ours and came under their possession almost as soon as they came through the door.

When we got them, they were so tiny and very skinny but that has since changed as they have grown like weeds with the help of a constant supply of kitten food supplemented with a daily treat of chicken pieces or really, whatever they want. It is after all, their house. We were told when we got them that they were only 4 weeks old but Chaya started going into heat before they were even 4 months old so we strongly suspect that they are actually older than we have been told. I am also a strong proponent of animal sterilization so we took both of them to be spayed at Karuna on November 2. That was totally scary but they have since made a full recovery and are back to their super-active and totally naughty selves.

A little about the girls. We gave Mira her name because early on she proved herself to be both brave and rebellious. She is definitely the leader of the pair. She is a bit bigger and is absolutely fearless. She loves to climb anything, including the curtains. She will then walk around on the curtain bar and tease her sister unmercifully since Chaya is too scared to climb up with her. Her new favorite hobby is climbing me and sitting on my shoulders and taking a ride as I walk around the apartment as if she were a furry parrot. She doesn't seem to mind the scratches that she leaves on my back as a result of her trying to hop on when I least expect it. But she is also a lover. She loves to climb into bed with us at night and meows until we let her under the blankets where she then curls up and sleeps on my chest (after the obligatory nibble on my fingers). Chaya was named because of her dark-flecked fur and is sadly a bit less photogenic than her sister. She is certainly not as adventurous as Mira, but you should not be fooled by this meekness because underneath lies a killer. She has successfully stalked untold numbers of ants as well as some bigger prey items as well. No cockroach or lizard stands a chance once Chaya has it in her sights. Chaya is also quite a cuddler, but she prefers to take her catnaps snuggled in the corner of whichever sofa one of us is occupying though she certainly doesn't mind taking up the whole couch either. While Mira fancies herself a parrot, Chaya seems to have some canine confusion. Her favorite game is playing fetch with a little ball of aluminum foil. She could play this for hours if only her pitiful owners could keep up with her. Both of them bring us such joy everyday, and we have spoiled them rotten I am afraid. I have included a few pics of what they looked like just after we brought them home and how they have grown since.

I am so excited to be a part of this group, I have not met a single cat owner in Bangalore. Whenever we take them to the Veterinary Hospital in Hebbal we get such strange looks from all of the dog owners wondering why we just don't have a dog like a normal person (not that I don't like dogs, I am just more a cat person). As relative newcomers to Bangalore, we are not familiar with the entire city and know of only 2 places where we can get kitty litter (and one of those places we literally discovered just last week). We had the hardest time getting rid of our girls' fleas because no one could tell us what products were available here (after trying powder for 2 months we found out that we could get Advantage and the fleas were gone overnight). I am also thrilled to get to go on and on about our girls to people who understand what it is to love a pet and can tolerate my rambling as they themselves probably do a fair bit of rambling of their own. Finally, I would love to contribute on behalf of all of the helpless stray dogs and cats in Bangalore beyond just adopting our girls. I am now accustomed to seeing the street dogs and cats but my heart still goes out to each and every one of them and I want to help in some way. However, as a foreigner it is somewhat difficult to know how to do this while also not offending the locals and appearing as some self-righteous jerk. I hope that the other members of this blog can help me to find ways to help and comfort these beautiful and gentle animals.

Hi,

I had a 5 year old persian cat, Maya, with tortoise shell coat. She is very adorable, peaceful and extremely friendly with people. I live near Hennur road and in gated community. Due to gated living the cat was an outdoor cat, and was neutered couple of years back. Since Deepavali day, the cat has not come home to eat its regular food and she is not seen in the neighborhood. My neighbors and the colony people are probably missing her as much as i do. She used to come with me for walks and was staring in the face of pet dogs as well as the strays without any fear.

Now if you by any chance come across this one, please do let me know. I suspect that she is stolen by someone as i did not see any body of hers. Moreover she is used to only one type of food and does not eat any other food unless she is in distress or lack of availability of this food. The food type she loves is Fit32 from Royal Canin. My heart aches to think of what might have happened to her. Please do let me know if you have any hint or if you get it by chance to your shelter. Thanks.

"This has been the most difficult decision for me to make till date, however its time for me accept the fact that my house is too small for Pearl & Jaguar. Pearl & Jaguar were born on 19th April 2007 & I got them home on 3rd June, 2007 and now they are 7 month old. They always loved playing with each other & loves to fetch the ball each time we throw it and they can play for hrs. Both are a sweet heart and very friendly by nature. Pearl has grey eyes & pink nose he is very cute, do not go on his looks he is very naughty & needs lots of attention he gets anoid very fast that's why we some time call him angry young man. The best thing about him is that he is very loving you can't resist yourself from pampering him, he has this eyes which speaks thousand words and I will miss them a lot. Jaguar is very sober in nature, he loves getting pampered and never gets enough of it. Jaguar most of the time losses to Pear on the ball fetching game, but there are days when he would be in form and would not let pearl to fetch the ball even once. Jaguar lets Pearl dominate him, that makes him very sweet brother. They both are vaccinated and were trained for about a month. Both are fawn in color. I would like to give them to some one who would love them unconditionally & who would adopt both of them together, as it would be very difficult for them to be without each other. Some one who has sufficient place for them to run around and play. They are one of the best thing that has ever happened to me and I am sure the lucky one who will have them will agree to me."

An update from Dubai - finally

Hi Yasmin, Pumy and Rina (if you're on this blog),

I know it's been close to nine months since I last spoke to any of you. Remember how I used to call and call, when I was trying to find a place to keep my babies Caramel and Ginger, before I left for Dubai? Well, after a hectic six months, of waiting for my work permit, finding a studio apartment and discovering that the rules for pet import had changed, I finally flew them in on the 12th of July. They recognised me at once as the kind lady who spoils them rotten. Sad to say, Ginger still does not have control of his legs and the vets have only advised me to "wait and see". But he's still as loving as ever. Vet care in Dubai is rather poor surprisingly. I miss Dr. Srikant very much. Please keep Ginger in your hearts and minds, as I am being advised by other parties to put him down. His quality of life is not that great as he is at home without me for a good eleven to twelve hours when I'm at work and he is still incontinent to a large extent. I'm not sure how fair it is for him as he hardly is living the life of a cat. Caramel is quite herself and if anything a lot more friendly these days. How are all of you? I'm taking this opportunity to thank all three of you for the support and help I received in Bangalore before I left. I'm still not completely settled here, but I do hope that when things are more stable, I can make a visit to India and talk to all of you. It's so wonderful to know that a group like this exists. I just wish I had known about all of you earlier. Take care all.

Do you have a cat that is awake and energetic at 1.A.M...does your cat sit on your chest and try to strangle you because there is noone to play fetch with him/her at an ungodly hour? often, cats..especially indoor cats raised without any playmates, rely on us to be their serva..err..pals. Cats, being creatures of the night, are zipping energy balls are all set to conquer the world at a time when carriages turn to pumpkins and princesses turn to cinder maids.

Here is something that may work to get your furball to curl up and snooze by your side. I say 'may work' because...hey! we may come up with ideas and theories, but they are still cats! They'll do whatever they want and whenever they want!

A carefully choreographed sequence of events act like valium for cats.

Hunting
Eating
Grooming
Sleep

Mimic play hunting with your cat...wiggle your toes under your sheet or allow yourself to be scratched and bled. The easiest is to let them be in their 'hunting' and 'stalking' mode for about five minutes. Let them 'stalk' and 'capture' their prey..i.e. your fingers or toes or your cat's favourite toy....a ball of crinkly aluminum foil should do!

Then feed the cat..again, dont overfeed them. Just so that whatever primitive part of their brain is crazy buzzing after a hunt is calmed down. Then groom them with a brush...they'd get the idea...they'd start licking themselves. And lo! they'll be snoozing like little angels on fluffy cloud beds.

Of course..they are still cats and if they choose to keep you up all night, deal with it.

In our household, there is some play after the eating, grooming and then they retire for the day. Since said play is them thunderingly chasing each other with spitting and hissing sound effects, I feed them early during the evening. Unfortunately, this means that they are bright-eyed and bushy-tailed by the time it's my hour to hit the sack..Oh well...

As you step into Lyuba's apartment, it is the silence that strikes you. This is not what you would expect, since Lyuba Zausalina - who has become something of a Moscow celebrity - shares her one-room flat in Vykhino with 45 cats and 2 dogs. Dozens of eyes follow you as you move from the door to the main room and yet not a meow, bark or squeak is heard. There are cats everywhere: they are perched on the cupboard, the chests of drawers, the benches, the tables, the television, the hat stand; they huddle together on bookshelves, form a heap on the bed; the two fattest and most mature cats assert their dominance over the rest by securing the comfiest spots on the bed.

"I started sheltering cats when my children left home," explains Lyuba as she strokes a strikingly handsome one-eyed Siberian. Lyuba's apartment serves as a cat shelter where people bring and collect homeless cats. "Recently an 80-year old lady with 15 cats passed away," says Lyuba as she opens a tin of cat food in the middle of her cramped living room. The floor seems to move as cats swarm about her legs in anticipation. "I took in the cats, and now with 45 of them, I am unable to accept any more, it's just getting too crowded."

As she bends down to empty the contents of two large tins onto fresh newspaper sheets, cats rush over from every corner. "It gets quite expensive looking after them. They get through at least six large tins a day, and even then not all of them get to the food." Lyuba gets no financial help to care for her strays. All the food is paid for by her and until recently she paid for the cats' neutering as well. "I used to get a good rate per group at a clinic in Dynamo. I can now get it done for free at another place." Lyuba pays for the treatment of sick cats herself. "This little one has kidney stones and I buy all his medication," sighs Lyuba as she points to the 180 ruble medicine bottle. Also, cleaning the eight litter-boxes is an almost full-time occupation.

"I'll be a hunchback soon," she laughs.

Lyuba occasionally receives much needed donations. She was impressed by the enterprise and dedication of a group of children from the Anglo-American school who came over with their teachers to bring food and toys.

Karina Romanos, from Belgium, acquired her Siberian cat, Shuba, last March. "Lyuba told us how affectionate she was. She has won over my husband, who is really a dog person!"

"In our local shelters each cat is kept in a cage for 6 months and then gets destroyed," laments Lyuba. These cats look very content, there is the convivial atmosphere of a great big happy family as the cats doze blissfully in a mass of fur and tails on the bed or climb onto guests' knee purring affectionately. "There's no room for me in that bed," laughs Lyuba. "They push me right up against the wall!"

What Lyuba desperately needs now is for people to relieve her of some of the cats. "It's always sad to see a long-time resident finally leave," she says, "but when you see them go to a good home, you realize that they're better off." n

The cats' ages vary from 4 months to 18 years.

Dogs in trouble!Please help!

I support an animal shelter called 'Anand Chhaaya Animal Welfare organisation'. We have about 170 dogs on our premises and feed a hundred more dogs. We also vaccinate and sterilize dogs after befriending them. This is a totally privately funded registered organization. We do not
get any funds from the government.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, we have lost the donations from our main contributor. Hence we have been unable to even feed the dogs well for the last couple of months. We are in dire need of funds and appeal to all dog lovers to support us in any way they can. People willing to
adopt dogs would be a blessing. All contributions to this organization are exempt from income tax under the section 80G.
If we get no help at all, we will be forced to euthanize these healthy, lovable animals!Any help at all, either in the form of donations or just spreading the word around could save lives.

Our German Shepherd, Gubby, gets along just fine with her little friend Kek.

In general, well-raised pet dogs ought to get along with cats, or at least get used to ignoring them most of the time. The trick is to introduce them to each other slowly, and be very patient as they make friends or arrive at a stable level of mutual apathy. This can take a few weeks, and they may still have their little arguments from time to time.

I have a 2-year-old Golden Retriever (her name is Ammu) who is an only pet (quite like an only child). I was thinking of getting a cat too, but dont wanna do it unless they can get along well together. Ammu has never been exposed to cats. Back home in Kerala my dad's cat and dogs used to get along well together; buit then Boris (the cat) was the oldest and bossed over the dogs from the time they were puppies. Anyone having cats and dogs together at home?

Homeopathy for Cats

Lately, I have been fascinated by Homeopathy. I found this site here about homeopathy for cats. Of course, it comes with all the required disclaimers.

***IMPORTANT*** N.B. The owner of this site does not consider homeopathic remedies a replacement to veterinary treatment, rather, a complimentary assistant. You should always consult your vet if your cat is ill.

Whilst there are many views regarding homeopathic remedies, personally I find their use helpful sometimes, at the Burmese Cat Chat & Tea Party a lady spoke about homeopathic remedies and their usage and offered the following statement "T.E.E.T.H" (Tried Everything Else Try Homeopathy) with which I concur.

That said, people who do for whatever reason, use homeopathic remedies should only do so after taking advice from a knowledgeable source.

I am not that knowledgeable source ! (We all start somewhere)

The following guidelines are for common symptoms and remedies, which I have extracted from various expert sources.

Further:

Always consult and confirm with a homeopathy specialist before determining the right dosage.

Aconite

Fever remedy, particularly if onset of symptoms is sudden. Eyes may be bloodshot and ear flaps may be red and hot. Can alleviate early heatstroke. Also very useful to help relieve shock brought on by a fright of some sort, or poisoning. Can be used for nosebleeds, and for conditions caused by exposure to cold winds.

In acute cases 1 tablet every 15 minutes for 3 doses. Otherwise one tablet twice daily. Discontinue on improvement, and see vet if symptoms persist

Apis Mel

For relief after insect bites and stings. Can help with arthritis, wheeziness, and may help with abscesses, particularly where the swelling is hot and very painful. Is useful for conjunctivitis with swollen eyelids. A natural diuretic.

In acute cases 1 tablet every 15 minutes for 3 doses. Otherwise one tablet twice daily. Discontinue on improvement, and see vet if symptoms persist

Arnica

Known as the ‘Fall herb’, extensively used for wounds and injuries of all types, including sprains and bruising. Helps stop bleeding and promotes healing. Given after parturition will help recovery of bruising. Very useful for counteracting shock.

In acute cases 1 tablet every 15 minutes for 3 doses. Otherwise one tablet twice daily. Discontinue on improvement, and see vet if symptoms persist

Arsenicum Alb

One of the most effective remedies for gastro-enteritis, it is also very useful for a number of other conditions. Acute vomiting, diarrhoea, nephritis, nasal discharge and conjunctivitis with acrid tears can also be alleviated with Arsen Alb.

In acute cases 1 tablet every 15 minutes for 3 doses. Otherwise one tablet twice daily. Discontinue on improvement, and see vet if symptoms persist

Belladonna

One of the great fever remedies, where onset is very sudden and extreme. Pulse may be elevated and heat, redness and pain may characterise symptoms. Used to ease convulsions. Also for acute ear inflammation. Symptoms are worse for noise and touch. The patient is thirsty.Can be given for mastitis, where the glands are hot and painful. Veterinary attention should be sought in all cases of mastitis.

Borax

For gingivitis with mouth ulcers.

In acute cases 1 tablet every 15 minutes for 3 doses. Otherwise one tablet twice daily. Discontinue on improvement, and see vet if symptoms persist

Bryonia

Painful joints which are worse for the slightest movements, and where heat aggravates the pain. Often increased thirst is present. Will help to relieve asthma, accompanied by a dry cough. Also useful for relieving mastitis, especially where the glands are hard and hot, and the queen shows reluctance to move. Again, veterinary attention should be sought in all cases of mastitis. Bryonia can be given to help dry up milk after weaning, and for false pregnancy where milk is present.

Also for alleviating the symptoms of phantom pregnancy, especially where frantic nest making is occurring. Useful if the queen is becoming anxious during labour, and afterwards with her kittens. Particularly beneficial for first-time mothers.

Rhus Tox

Classic remedy for stiffness, especially when it is worse for the first movement after rest, but improves with continued movement. There are quite a few animal Lovers in this world but probably not enough to share the pain and struggle that these creatures have bear each moment of their lives...

All we need is a few more hearts to love and care for the many more animal who are still waiting to be loved.

I have a few dogs in my locality , and the moment I step out of my house they spring with joy, wagging their tails. Probably they are the happiest creatures on earth when I return home from work :) A warm welcome home every evening for nothing much that I do for them.

Just a little bit of love and affection from all of Us, from Each one of Us can change our world and theirs too.

It is just One world ... it is our World and it is their World too. We need to realise that a change in our world is impossible without them... We are all organs of the same organism called 'Life'.

Is there truly an issue called "Animal Welfare'? Can we be happy when a dog in the neighbourhood is in pain; can you feel happy sitting in a grand eat-out where another animal frantically looks out for little left over food? Animal Welfare is our Welfare.

Welfare is Happiness of each and every conscious being in the Universe.

And Happiness is in Loving, Giving and above all in seeing happiness in all the eyes around you.

Let us give it a try to sow seeds of happiness on earth...

Our cat, Kajal

Our cat Kajal had a fight with another cat two weeks ago and fell off the roof. She is paralysed with a little sensation in the hind legs. However, she cannot move and has to drag herself and has lost her bladder and bowel control. She is on medication and the vet has said that since she has some hind leg sensation, though it does hot help her move, we should not give up hope and wait and watch.She may regain some movement over a period of time.

If anyone has tips on the care of paralysed cats, do let us know. I want to give her massages and physiotherapy to prevent bed sores. Also what kind of diet is best?

Black Cats Have Undeserved Reputation

The superstitions surrounding Friday 13th and black cats may be mere myths, but they are beliefs that are shared by many cultures around the world. For instance, millions of Americans believe that Friday 13th is an unlucky day. Holding fears about the imagined dangers of this particular day usually affects only those individuals holding the conviction; when Friday, October 13th rolls around, they may not go to work, and they probably won't schedule a trip or plan a special occasion. On the other hand, the myths about black cats in several cultures can have serious, often deadly, consequences for these ebony felines.

Superstitions in western culture about cats, black cats in particular, are of fairly recent origin. The ancient Egyptians worshipped the cat in the form of the goddess Bastet. Statuettes of sleek cats from Egypt can be seen today in almost every museum in the world. Adorned with an earring or jeweled collar, sitting upright, their tails wrapped around their bodies, they gaze serenely into eternity. The Romans considered the cat sacred and introduced it into Europe. However, by the 17th century, cats in many parts of Europe began to be associated with witchcraft and the supernatural, and in several countries were subjected to shocking cruelty. Black cats have, more than any other feline, been mistreated over the centuries. Today, the myth of the "unlucky" black cat is still widespread in several European countries and in the United States, whereas in other cultures, such as Japan and England, they have traditionally been honored for the good luck they are believed to bring.

Black cats are particularly vulnerable around Halloween when they receive a very bad press - they are depicted looking ferocious or cunning in spooky drawings and cards, or shown sitting beside witches on broomsticks. Many shelters, The SF/SPCA among them, have implemented policies to protect black cats from potential harm by suspending their adoptions until after Halloween. Moreover, many otherwise rational people won't consider adopting a black cat, and they generally remain in shelters longer than their more colorful brothers and sisters. In addition, they are often considered dull or plain. It's high time that the groundless superstitions about black cats were laid to rest. The staff and volunteers at The SF/SPCA work hard to counteract the maligning of these sleek, ebony felines. They encourage adopters to look past the outward appearance of every cat, and to focus on its individuality, personality and wonderful qualities.

It's interesting to note that new scientific research has shown that black cats may be more fortunate than their fairer relatives: "... black coats may have evolved separately many times in different species of cat - indicating that dark fur has a survival benefit. Furthermore, the mutations leading to a black coat are in the same gene family as those involved in human diseases like AIDS, so it may be that black cats are more resistant to disease than others."* A black coat is also a benefit as hunting camouflage, giving the black cat an evolutionary advantage.

The San Francisco SPCA is currently home to a bevy of beautiful black cats and kittens just waiting for a change of luck. So, let's throw superstition to the wind and take a leaf out of Groucho Marx's book when he said: "A black cat crossing your path signifies…that it's going somewhere."

Pick up a newspaper and every now and then you will find a case of dog bite. Who is to blame? One major reason apart from public negligence and apathy towards why the problem exists in first place, is some over zealous but ill informed BBMP officers. In a game of "I am samarter" these officers employ private vehicles and people to catch dogs from their area and release them in another area or worse kill and dump these dogs. Friendly, neutered dogs are picked up and dumped elsewhere. So while the officer thinks he has "cleaned" his area, he does not know he has created problem not only for his area but the area where he is dumping too. Besides being illegal it is sheer foolishness and seriously endangers the success of ABC. It is not only making innocnet dogs face death sentence but jeopardizes the safety of citizens too. Click these two links to learn why this method does not work, what will work. This fact that relocation and killing neutered dogs is so dangerous and unwanted is common sense.

People have been complaing about relocation, killing of friendly community dogs and the resulting dog bites because of new dogs being introduced in random areas. But then who cares? after all it is a dog's life. Kill and move on. This is what some smart BBMP officials think.

Please read the news article above and report any van besides these picking up dogs. Neutered dogs should not be picked up at all. Even for revaccination, it has to be done on the spot. Please safegaurd your community dogs and in turn make it safer for all the kids in your area too.

US cat 'predicts patient deaths'

A US cat that is reportedly able to sense when a nursing home's residents are about to die is baffling doctors.

Oscar has a habit of curling up next to patients at the home in Providence, Rhode Island, in their final hours.

According to the author of a study in the New England Journal of Medicine, the two-year-old cat has been observed to be correct in 25 cases so far.

Staff now alert the families of residents when he sits down next to their ailing loved one.

"He doesn't make many mistakes. He seems to understand when patients are about to die," David Dosa, a professor at Brown University who carried out the research, told the Associated Press news agency.

'Premonitions'

Oscar was adopted as a kitten at Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Centre.

The cat is said to do his own rounds, just like the doctors and nurses at the home, but is not generally friendly to patients.

Although most families are grateful for the warning Oscar seems to provide, some relatives ask that the pet be taken away while they say their last goodbyes to their loved ones.

When put outside the room, Oscar is said to pace up and down meowing in protest.

Thomas Graves, a feline expert from the University of Illinois, told the BBC: "Cats often can sense when their owners are sick or when another animal is sick.

"They can sense when the weather will change, they're famous for being sensitive to premonitions of earthquakes."

A doctor who treats patients at the home said she believed there was probably a biochemical explanation, rather than the cat being psychic.

Most cats do not like getting wet - as anyone who has tried to bathe a moggie will know.

But as these pictures show, there's always the exception to the rule. For the cat in question is a large male white Bengal tiger called Odin.

Six years old, and at the prime of his life, Odin lives at the Six Flags Discovery Kingdom Zoo in Vallejo, near San Francisco. He is about 10ft long from nose to tail, and is an excellent swimmer.

White tigers - the colour is caused by an unusual genetic combination - are rare in the wild, although there are several dozen in zoos.

Odin was hand-raised at the zoo. And after he was weaned, his British trainer Lee Munro discovered his remarkable skill: when a lump of meat was thrown into a pool of water, Odin would happily dive in after it.

In fact, although Big Cats generally do not like water, tigers of all types have been spotted taking to the water to hunt and even to bathe for pleasure.

Odin can now be observed in action - a large pool with glass walls has been constructed at the zoo to allow visitors to watch him gliding through the water with all the grace of a polar bear.

Tragically, within our lifetimes, zoos might be the only places left to see these magnificent animals.

A century ago there were about 100,000 tigers in the wild. Now there are just 2,500 adults, with the Bengal variety almost extinct.

the tragedy is that samuel#1, a special catagory cat with minor impairment died- died from brutal bites, so brutal that I found his head maligned, an eye poped out and god knows what the attack was like?
four large hound dogs attacked the cat, they were after it all along,
and finally came a surprise middle of the night break in attack....
for food, his food.......

this is the third cat killed, I have lost two kittens previously,

Mr.Anil will get an invite to our catsofbangalore blog if he responds to this post in the comment section to confirm he does desire to join our catsofbangalore blog. Our cat blog is for all catlovers and animal lovers. They dont even have to be from Bangalore.

Having said that, we do not wish to encourage animal haters and especially those who have a deep seated hatred towards strays*. But I feel that the email from Anil Beemahiah deserves a reply because he seems genuinely distressed about the dead cats. Any pet owner/animal lover will agree that stories like this strike fear in their hearts and plunge them into the deepest despair because it is a case of animal vs animal.

As a response to Mr.Anil Bheemaiah, I want to say that we do believe that violent and sick animals MUST be put down. It is for their own sake. On the other hand, a barking dog or a behaviourally unbalanced animal is NOT a violent animal. I cannot stress this enough. Street dogs generally do not attack other animals. Some of them do in play. Some of them are rather territorial and this is the #1 reason why street dogs will chase strangers or those who seem strange to them(i.e. they are not frequent visitors/familiar faces), even if they are sometimes on two wheelers. Street dogs also do not allow other street dogs to enter their streets and this is a good way to keep the stray dog population down.

You see, when territorial street dogs are sterilised and vaccinated, it will eliminate the chances of dogs from other areas entering a particular street. Sterilising them will also make them docile(even tho' they will still remain territorial. sterilising usually brings down the aggression level of dogs in heat...when sterilised, they lose all reproductive impulse)than unsterilised dogs. Of course, the most obvious benefit of sterilising dogs is the lack of future stray dog generations.

Dogs instinctly hunt in packs and when they 'hunt' for their food at garbage piles that citizens sometimes irresponsibly allow to fester at street corners, they become very territorial towards it. That this poor cat was mauled by more than one dog only suggests to me that this was a territorial food fight.

The second possibility is that the cat might have gotten in the middle of a dog fight during mating season. I am wondering how the four street dogs can break into a home to look for a cat's food. I can only assume that cat is a stray too. Of course, we'll never know the circumstances of the sad demise of that poor cat. I dont believe that it was a pack of 'violent' dogs that killed the cat, although it is possible that dogs that were behaviourily challenged due to hormones or hunger could have acted violently as a pack. I know this sounds like an apology, but it is merely a rational and logical attempt to dissect the circumstances of an event to which there were no witnesses.

What we can DO is minimise the occurance of such tragedies by taking the necessary steps:

Vaccinations
Sterilisations
Community caregivers to provide the street dogs with food.
Community monitoring in case of medical emergencies

Finally, while it does not strike me as if the dogs were violent(i dont believe that they are 'hounds' as Mr.Anil suggested as hounds and esp Mudhol hounds are hunting dogs and are tempermentally not suited for urban street living. these are highly trained dogs and i doubt if someone abandoned 4 Mudhol hounds on a street), it makes sense to check for violent behaviour in dogs with a vet or through vets from organisations like CUPA. If the animal is violent because of sickness or beyond redemption, there is no alternative but to put the animal to sleep. It is a terrible decision to make, but it is the right thing to do.

* The reason I would like Mr.Anil to comment to this post before we send him an invite is because we have been receiving mails from certain hateful elements. We dont know if they are jokes or if they are serious. One example is this guy who wanted us to help him set up a dog meat processing factory as he knows from eating in northern eastern Indian states that dog meat is delicious. We decided not to take such requests seriously and we do not wish to give publicity and voice to such insane behaviours. Also, regardless of the cruelty of this person's intent or mischief, as the case may be, we did not want to reveal his real name or email.

Mr. Anil seems like a genuine animal lover who is distressed about the demise of Samuel, the cat. This place is open for all cat lovers and animal lovers. However, we will not tolerate hateful sentiments expressed here. If Mr.Anil comments to this post and tells us his intentions, we will be more than happy to welcome him to catsofbangalore as a member.
